Two years ago, checking a game leak was comparatively simple. You looked at the source, the UI, the build quality and whether a rights holder reacted. In 2026, that process is much harder. GamesRadar has documented how AI-generated GTA VI fakes are now mixing into the same feeds carrying reported Cyberleek material, with some clips realistic enough to fool anyone who sees them for a few seconds on X or YouTube.
GTA VI is almost a perfect target for synthetic footage
Rockstar’s games are expected to look unusually realistic, and leaked development footage is usually short, compressed and imperfect. Those conditions protect AI mistakes. A strange NPC hand can be dismissed as a development bug. A warped reflection can be blamed on compression. The visual language of unfinished software gives generated video convenient excuses.
A watermark is not an authenticity certificate
Even if Cyberleek has been associated with material that multiple outlets consider credible, anybody can paste the same branding onto a fake clip. Copyright takedown chatter is not enough either. Verification needs a chain: where the clip first appeared, whether details match known official assets, whether reliable reporters independently examined it, and whether the footage remains internally consistent.
In the generative-video era, “it looks like GTA VI” is no longer a verification standard.
What should make you slow down
Watch small text, button prompts, hands, reflections, wheel geometry, distant signs and repeated objects across several seconds. Synthetic clips can hold together in a wide shot and then break when the model has to preserve the same detail through movement. Camera behavior can also feel suspiciously smooth or strangely disconnected from normal game input.
The Extended Look is now a verification baseline
Rockstar’s August 27 Extended Look is now public, giving us a much larger official comparison set captured in-game on PlayStation 5. Interface elements, animations, locations and interaction patterns can now be checked against that source instead of against memory or reposts. A mismatch does not automatically prove a viral clip is synthetic — different builds can change — but a clip that contradicts several current official reference points deserves a lower confidence level until stronger provenance appears.
How to treat the next viral clip
The current GTA VI leak wave has produced a lesson bigger than any one mechanic: speed of circulation is not speed of truth. If a clip pressures you to believe it immediately because it was “taken down fast,” pause. The strongest evidence survives comparison, and the strongest reporting tells you exactly where evidence ends and theory begins.
Provenance matters more than visual polish now
Generative video has changed the old verification shortcut that said a clip was probably real if it looked expensive. A convincing fake can reproduce compression, camera shake, interface fragments and the visual language of leaked development footage. The first question therefore has to move away from appearance and toward provenance: who posted it first, is there an uninterrupted source chain, does the account have a history that can be checked, and can any detail be independently matched to official material or credible reporting? A beautiful clip with no provenance is weaker evidence than an ordinary screenshot with a traceable origin.
A useful verification workflow is deliberately slow
Before treating a viral clip as a GTA VI leak, save the original context, identify the earliest accessible upload, compare frames rather than reposted captions, look for contradictions in UI and world geometry, and wait for independent corroboration. Reverse-image and metadata checks can help, but neither is magic after social platforms recompress media. The most important discipline is editorial: uncertainty should remain uncertainty. Being ten minutes later than a rumor account is a better trade than publishing a fabricated scene as fact.
